Highest Paying Google AdSense Keywords

A friend sent me a list of supposedly highest paying keywords for contextual advertising. I wonder is this true or whether this is just a gimmick to make other people believe so... and me supporting the hype by reproducing it here? For your amusement the partial list is at the end of this article. (and don't be surprised if google actually serves you those ads matching those keywords.)

Assuming that whoever produced this list is correct, by looking at the data one can tell that NY and Chicago lawyers are willing to pay a lot of money to get a potential customer via online ads.

But can someone explain why mesothelioma is in the top rank? Is it because people are afraid to get it? Or is it because many people have it already?

Luckily Google doesn't allow porn ads, otherwise we would have been drowning in nasty ads, which probably would have had the highest click rate ever.

What is Page Rank?

Page Rank is affected by things such as the number of links pointing to your website, and the amount of unique and relevant content on your website.

A keyword is a typical word or phrase you’d expect people to use when searching for your site. That’s about as simple as we can explain it.

The number of keywords you use on a particular page in relation to the number of total words on that page. Playing by Google's Rules: Google's "Webmaster Guidelines"
While its important to focus on natural search optimization techniques, it is more important to adhere to Google's policies - termed "Webmaster Guidelines." Google aggressively monitors their index of websites and is careful to make sure that the websites and webpages

Add value to the Internet, and

Provide unique content

Breaking any of Google's policies or engaging in any "illicit practices" may lead to Google removing an entire website from its index and search engine. According to Google: "Once a site has been removed, it will no longer show up in results on Google.com or on any of Google's partner sites."

Below is a list of "Webmaster Guidelines" written by Google and available at http://www.google.com/webmasters/. Follow these guidelines carefully as not doing so will result in Google pulling your site:

"Quality Guidelines - Basic principles:

Make pages for users, not for search engines. Don't deceive your users, or present different content to search engines than you display to users.

Avoid tricks intended to improve search engine rankings. A good rule of thumb is whether you'd feel comfortable explaining what you've done to a website that competes with you. Another useful test is to ask, "Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn't exist?"

SID tracking is an advanced affiliate tool that enables affiliates to track the origin of each transaction and is hugely beneficial for large affiliate campaigns and for paid search initiatives precisely because they empower affiliates with very detailed tracking metrics capable of improving efficiency, conversions, and return on investment (ROI).
You can create your own SID values, and SIDs within your links are passed through the CJ tracking system. When a click-through converts to a lead or sale on eBay, the SID is recorded and displayed in the publishers' transaction reporting. Using SID tracking, the publisher can track the total number of transactions driven by each keyword. This is an effective method to track individual link or creative conversions. Day-Parting
Certain keywords or campaigns perform considerably better during certain parts of the day, week, or month. In these situations, affiliates have benefited greatly from "day-parting": the practice of raising CPC bids to effectively emphasize creatives during particular hours, days, or weeks. If, for instance, your keywords convert 300% better during 7-9PM EST, you might increase your CPC bids so that your creatives will appear in higher positions during those hours. Day-parting can be achieved in three ways:

Segment Keyword Groups and Campaigns

As noted above, tracking and testing are essential elements of effective and efficient paid search advertising. Tracking and testing, however, can be difficult and burdensome for large keyword lists that can reach into the thousands.

By segmenting keyword groups and ad campaigns by specific variables (keyword, creative, maximum CPC, landing page, etc), advertisers are able to isolate each variable and determine what is effective. This insight can then be applied to the other segments and hopefully be used to increase overall ROI. When keyword lists are not segmented, for instance, the data becomes overwhelming and it becomes difficult to target which variables influence which metrics!

Utilize "2nd Tier" PPC Engines

Google and Overture are easily the largest PPC engines. They draw the most advertisers and they reach the most users; however, because of the crowded landscape, Google and Overture typically carry very high costs per click. There are several smaller ("2nd tier") PPC platforms that, despite have smaller audience reaches, provide similar click through rates (CTR) with substantially lower costs per click. Moreover, these smaller PPC services frequently provide personalized customer-service which enable advertisers to reach traffic from different, untapped communities. A paid search best practice is to complement your Google and Overture campaigns with PPC advertising on the smaller platforms (see the list below for a sample of available PPC services). The benefits can be tremendous: lower CPC, higher CTR, increased market penetration and site traffic, and increased ACRUs and commissions!

Utilize Untargeted, Niche Keywords

Identifying relevant and effective keywords is often straightforward. For example, imagine the fictional affiliate Golfers-Equipment.com. Relevant keywords and phrases for this company would be golf clubs and Callaway driver. These keywords, however, might have high CPC rates because they are rather general and probably have numerous other companies bidding on them.

It is possible, however, to avoid crowds (and high CPCs) by identifying niche keywords and phrases. Although misspellings, unique synonyms, and clever phrases deliver less traffic, they generally have very high CTRs with very low CPCs. Again using Golfers-Equipment.com as an example, the affiliate might consider complementing the more general keywords by bidding on the following "niche" ones: Caloway driver, Calloway wood, golfing clubs, golfers clubs, golfing irons, etc.

PPC platforms like Google and Overture offer tools such as the Keyword Suggestion Tool and the Search Suggestion Tool, respectively. By inputting keywords into these tools, the PPC engine will output variations and related permutations of your words and phrases. These are excellent tools to expand your keyword reach and utilize niche keywords.

Using different keyword matches (such as broad match, exact match, and phrase match) is an excellent way to target niche words. Likewise, utilizing negative keywords prevents superfluous, untargeted results. Consider, for instance, an affiliate that markets cruise vacations; they might bid on island cruise, Alaskan Cruise, or even cruise. They would also want to use negative keywords to disassociate any search with Tom Cruise ( -Tom).
Understand Your Competitive Landscape

Competition plays a critical role in PPC advertising because marketers essentially "bid" for ad placements. Understanding the competitive nature of particular PPC segments is crucial in formulating campaign metrics (CPC, CPA, ROI). That content doesn't need to be overly extensive, but it must support the eBay level data (products, listings, pricing) presented on the page. For instance, consider a webpage dedicated to the classic board-game Monopoly. There are over 3,000 "Monopoly" listings on eBay.com - all of which can displayed on your webpage(s) via our Editor Kit and API tools. That information is great, but the search engines want to see it alongside other value-adding content such as an introductory paragraph. A 200-250 word introduction would provide unique content, improve conversion rates and user experience, in addition to improving search engine rankings.

About.com is a strong example of a site that develops short, informational "articles" across 1,000s of categories and products. Generating unique content can be time consuming. If content is needed for only select number of pages, it can be done by oneself or internally. Highly indexed Web sites are designed to be both user-friendly and search-engine-friendly. Search engines periodically send "robots" or "crawlers" to scour every Web site. The following initiatives will make it easier for those crawlers to search, index, and output the information within your Web site, which will improve your natural search rankings.

Title Tags (Page Titles): Each of your Web site's pages should have a distinct 6-10 word title using relevant keywords found throughout that page. If,.for instance, your Web page provides advice regarding college entrance exams, your title might be "SAT Tips and Hints for Students". Visit www.washingtonpost.com for an excellent example of great page titles.
Site Maps: Site maps are crucial to improving natural search rankings precisely because they enable engine crawlers to access each of your Web site's pages. Your site map should begin with a brief description of your Web site's purpose or mission and then include text links to all major site pages (maximum of 100 links). You should also include a brief explanation above each subset or category of links.

Each page within your Web site should provide a text link to your site map. Additionally, your site map should be stored in your root directory - making it easily accessible to all crawlers. Visit WashingtonPost.com's "Site Index" for an excellent example of a site map best practice. Remember, that search engines only crawl the first 100 links on a webpage - including your sitemap.

It is important to note that search engine crawlers have difficulty with drop-down menus, JavaScript, and search boxes. Site maps are simple ways to attract crawlers to each page.
Utilize Your Error Pages: Too often companies forget about error pages (such as 404 errors). Error pages should always re-direct "lost" users to valuable, text-based pages. Placing text links to major site pages is an excellent practice. Visit www.cnet.com/error for an example of a well-utilized error page.
Meta Tags: Make sure that 100% of your site is tagged with pertinent keywords found throughout your site. Beware, however, that the search crawlers will interpret excessively long tags with superfluous words negatively!

Visit www.duke.edu and select "View" and then "Source" from your browser's navigation menu. Duke.edu lists all related meta tags by keyword and by description. The meta tag listings are stored in the html code, beneath the page title.
URL and File Names: Short, appropriately named files and URLs enable engines to easily crawl your site. Always keep the most important content at the root level and name directories appropriately (think keywords!). If possible, try to place pages at a maximum of two directories deep. For example, NFL.com lists the entire roster of the New England Patriots at this straightforward link: www.nfl.com/teams/rosters/NE.

Additionally, when naming files or folders with two words, separate the words with either a dash or underscore. For example, name a directory /horse-racing/ rather than /horseracing/.
Page Size Under 75k: Always keep page sizes under 75k - most search engines stop crawling when a page exceeds this limit.
robots.txt: Robots.txt is a text file that essentially speaks to search engine crawlers -effectively welcoming or prohibiting them to various parts of a Web site. Utilize your robots.txt file to ensure that crawlers are invited to your site and excluded from those areas with sensitive information (such as files contained within a CGI folder). If you are unfamiliar with robots or your robots.txt file, visit www.robotstxt.org/wc/faq.html for a thorough explanation.
Links: Strong linkage to your Web site raises your relevance and eventually your page rank. Improve linkage by contacting related Web sites and Webmasters and kindly ask them to create a text link to your site. Forming strategic alliances with relevant sites and services also works well. Additionally, construct and submit related articles to online publications in exchange for linkage.
Page Content: Your page content should mirror all of the optimization you have performed within your page titles, meta tags, and file names. Make sure to place strong, relevant keywords throughout the page body and in text. Place pertinent keywords within your headers by using header tags (H1, H2, etc). Keywords can also be stressed by bold and italics formatting. Go to www.itt-tech.com to see an excellent example of highlighting keywords and terms with text.
Submit Your Site to the Engines: Of course these best practices are useless if a search engine fails to find your site! Most of the search engines (Google, Yahoo!, AltaVista, etc) allow you to submit your site for free; upon entering your URL, email contact, and other pertinent information, the search engine directs its crawlers to enter your site.

However, before submitting your site to the major search engines, submit it to www.dmoz.org. Dmoz.org catalogs over 3.8 million Web sites and distributes collected information to many of the major search engines and portals. Inclusion in the dmoz.org catalog typically has a beneficial impact upon page rankings.

But here's the amazing thing - no matter how much money AdSense is making for you right now, a few simple tweaks can increase that amount considerably. And I should know, after learning about these tricks, I more than doubled my AdSense commissions! The self-proclaimed AdSense gurus and experts are sharing this insider knowledge, for a fee. 1) Color code your ads to match your web site palette *exactly*. Don't use frames around your ads. 4) Research competitive keywords using a keyword research tool such as Keyword Discovery or grab a list of the most popular keywords from various sources and use them in your web site pages where relevant. Targeting popular keywords should trigger AdSense ads on your pages that utilize those keywords. 8) Use the full allowance of multiple AdSense ads on each of your pages - 3 regular AdSense ads, plus 1 link unit. Use careful placement of these ads so they blend into your site and don't distract from your content. Clever use of this allowance can be seen on this page about bad Internet dating stories - http://www.lovestory.com.au/bad-stories.htm - where you see: 1 horizontal 4 link ad unit towards the top of the page under the first paragraph. 1 vertical skyscraper text ad unit about halfway down the left hand side under "Sponsor Links". 1 vertical skyscraper image ad unit down the left hand side under "Sponsor Links". 1 horizontal text banner unit at the bottom of the page with images above each ad to draw attention to them. You can also include 1 AdSense referral button in addition to the 3 other units.

9) Tailor your page content to a particular niche or focus. Page content that is tailored towards a specific theme is more likely to trigger AdWords ads that closely match the content and are therefore more likely to interest your visitors and inspire them to click. Don't create pages merely for the sake of placing AdSense ads. Visitors (and search engines) can see through this ruse in an instant.

10) Use custom Ad Channels for each of your ad placements, for example, "Top 5 Link Unit Blue Palette" or "Left Side Navigation Image Skyscraper" etc. Tweak, track and measure the success of each of these custom channels so you know what gives you the highest CTR. You might want to ad a keyword when searching for images. Perhaps have a site about soccer, and you want soccer images. You can type in "Soccer royalty free images" or "soccer ball royalty free images". I don't remember the exact code you use to add the pictures above the Google ads, but you can watch Michael Cheney's Video's, and see how he earns over $20,000 a month with simple ads on his site. There are no guarantees in life,
so I don’t guarantee that following these tips will bring you more money every time. However, I do guarantee that they will greatly increase your chances of pulling more of the top-paying AdSense ads to your site than if you don’t follow these suggestions. Enough with the disclaimers, let’s get down to the business of making money.

Google lets advertisers bid anywhere from a minimum of .05 per click right up to a whopping $100. It should be pretty obvious that you’re not going to get rich running .05 cent ads on your site, but getting a few $100 ads, or even some $10, $20, or $30 ads can’t be a bad thing, right? Now the problem is, Google is pretty closed-mouthed about who is paying what for their ads, and there is no real way to determine which words pay the most per AdSense click. But ah, far away in a parallel universe we find another Pay-Per-Click provider called Overture.
It seems that Overture is less sensitive about releasing their top-priced words and anyone who cares to find out what web sites are paying for words and phrases can do so by simply using Overtures tattle-tale special pricing tool (http://www.pixelfast.com/overture/). And it couldn’t be easier to use. You simply type in a key word or phrase and the tool returns a list of advertisers using that word and how much they are paying. It even shows you the actual ad. Oh what a treasure trove of wealth-grabbing results this can be if you know what can be done with that priceless information.

Consider this possibilityAny key word or phrase that’s worth big bucks on Overture is probably worth big bucks on Google as well, maybe even more, right? So try this experiment: Enter the phrase “SEO Services” without the quotes in the Overture tool (http://www.pixelfast.com/overture/).
When I entered that phrase on the day I wrote this article, I was found a company called SEO Inc. that was willing to pay $8.01 per click, followed by SEO Advantage at $8.00, and Online Web Consultants at $6.50. Other bidders appeared below them in the $3.00 range straight on down to some who wouldn’t pay more than a dime per click. Now, if a company is willing to pay that much money for a click on Overture, it is probably willing to pay that or more on Google. Even if that particular company isn’t advertising on Google,
you can be pretty sure that the same key phrase is drawing near the same bid price from other companies who do advertise on Google. So what that means is there is no way that you can possibly afford NOT to have some web pages posted somewhere that are targeted to those sweet-paying words. All you have to do is use Overture’s pricing tool to find the highest-paying key words that are related to your site and then optimize those words to start pulling similar ads. If all goes to plan, you can perhaps double, triple, or even quadruple your AdSense revenue without needing any increase in traffic or click-through rate.

Common Adsense Mistakes

1.Clicking ads on your site.

This is the biggest of all the adsense mistakes and an easiest way to get your account banned.

2. Editing adsense codes.

You are not allowed to edit the adsense codes you obtain from your adsense account. It is also advised to make the color changes etc from the adsense account itself instead of editing it from the codes. This is to avoid the possibility of mistakes.

3.Placing more ad units than allowed on a page.

Only 3 ad units, 1 link unit, 2 search tabs, 4 different referral buttons are allowed on a single page. It should always be made sure that all your pages are within the allowed list.
4. Using other contextual PPC ads together with google ads.

You are not allowed to display other contextual ads on a page which is showing google ads. Google ads, YPN ads etc are examples of contextual ads. Amazon ads are examples of non contextual ads. However there is a debate on whether amazon's omakase is contextual or not.It has been informed by adsense support that Amazon ads can be displayed on the same page with google ads.

5. Labeling ads with texts other than "sponsored links" or "advertisements".

Only the above mentioned two labels are allowed for google ads. I have seen that some publishers uses labels like "sponsors" "links" "links of interest" "click here for more info" etc. I can assure that these are against adsense TOS and can get your account banned.
6.Disclosing your adsense reports data to public.

You are not allowed to disclose anything other than your aggregate earnings to others. I have seen many people copying data from their reports and pasting with their questions on different forums. Everyone must know that this isn't allowed at all.

7.Placing direct download links for music or video on your adsense site.

According to adsense TOS, no link on your site should directly lead to audio or video result.

8.Too many entirely different topics on a single site.

This mistake won't get you banned but this can make it difficult for you to get relevant ads.

9. Not updating your site often enough.

This also won't get you banned but will affect your earnings and traffic. A site which is updated regularly will be getting a lot of return traffic and the ads will be changing from time to time thus the chances of same ads appearing for too long and people becoming not interested in clicking on the ads is reduced.

10. Not blending ads with your pages.

To get a good click through you should make ads look like a part of your site and not as an alien from mars.

11. Setting up the payment hold for too long.

Adsense is very strict about click fraud and they can ban any account if they detects fraud clicks.Once you are banned they won't pay you the money you earned before you was banned. So it is not a good practice to set up a payment hold for too long a time interval.

12. Not checking your adsense reports at least once a day.

If you don't check your reports regularly you won't know when something suspicious happens on your account. If you are checking it regularly you can write to adsense support whenever you find something suspicious and it can save your account from getting banned.

13.Not reading adsense TOSandPPcarefully.

If you have multiple sites or multiple directories in your site for different subjects and you have placed Adsense codes in your site, I am sure you would like to know: (a) from which site or directory you are earning the most / least, (b) which Adsense ads are being clicked and (c) from which page?

CREATE CHANNELS FOR EACH SITE

To get separate stats for each site / section / directory / page with Adsense, you need to create channels for each one. Create a channel with a relevant name and generate a code for that channel. Paste that particular Adsense code to the concerned pages / sites.

GET CHANNEL STATS IN REAL TIME

Google now provides Channel Data in real time. Earlier, it used to provide data for '2 days before'. Follow the procedure mentioned below :

1. From 'Date Range' drop down menu, select 'today'.

2. Check the radio button : Group data by 'Channel'.

3. On the right hand panel, check the radio button 'Channel data'.

4. Click on 'Select ALL' at the bottom of channel list.

5. Click on 'Display Report'.

Now you get the seggregated report for clicks generated for each channel.

WHICH ADS ARE BEING CLICKED AND FROM WHICH PAGE?

Add Free Stats provides a very detailed web stats which satisfies most webmasters. You may open a free account at : http://www5.addfreestats.com, get the code and paste it at the bottom of each of your pages.

Make sure that in 'Your Account' section you mark 'Yes' for 'Exit link tracking'.

Now check your stats at Add Free Stats, and you will find a "A" icon beside the visitors' ip. That means that visitor has clicked on an Adsense code. Place your mouse over the icon, and you can see which ad has been clicked.

You can also generate a separate report of pages that have generated Adsense click. Select 'Exit Links/Adsense' from the drop down menu marked as 'Pages'. Here you get a folder icon named Adsense, the number of Adsense clicks etc. Click on the Adsense folder icon and you get the number of Adsense clicks on each page and which ads are clicked on that page. Click on the 'hour glass' icon and you get the CTR, PV too for each page.

When you are finally onboard, first of congratulations! Now it’s time to see what this program can do for you! On this article I will mostly talk about Adsense for Content though, since that is, atleast in my opinion the system that works best.

So now you got your Adsense account up and running, time to choose your style! As I said above I would recommend Adsense for content since this is by far the easiest way of getting targeted ads on your site that your visitors might actually click on! First you get to choose if you want to have text ads or banners (images), or a mixture of both.

My recommendation here would be to go with text ads, small discreet stuff that works very well integrated on your pages. I would go for the banner images, not just yet at least but I will get back to using banners later on.

Try to pick a size that works for you, and be very mindful about the colors you can choose from, I would definitely recommend that you try to use the same, or similar colors on the ads that you have on your own links and a href stuff. Also try to give the ads some space and if you can, give them a good position, maybe somewhere in your text block?

Next up is definitely Text Links, these are small works of wonder and works very well if places right. I will get back to these small wonders later on this page but for now the direction you should be aiming for is trying to integrate them, and if you can even try to give them the space like you would for a normal navigation menu! (but as I said before, don’t try to be a smart ass and hide the links or make them too tricky, sure you might earn some nickels on it but the chances that Google won’t like your stunt makes it NOT worth it.)

*Use Competitive ad filter

An internet newsletter is the equivalent of a brochure or an offline informative newsletter - it needs to capture attention, deliver high quality information and content and convince readers that your company is worth remembering. With Internet newsletters, however, there is an additional issue. Unlike a printed brochure, which everyone sees the same, Internet newsletters are displayed on different browsers and screen resolutions. This may affect the way the newsletter looks or the way the layout is seen on different computers. Another test you should do with your newsletter concerns the way the message arrives at your target audience. Let's have a look at both test types that you should do before you submit your newsletter to your subscribers.

Technical Tests

There are many browsers that interpret web pages slightly differently. Many websites that look great on Netscape are displayed all wrong on Internet Explorer, and viceversa. This calls for your attention as you cannot afford to release the newsletter and have it display poorly on certain web browsers. Before sending it out try to proof it in several browsers and on different computers with different resolutions. This may be a hard thing to do if you don't have a larger office with several computers, but you can always ask a few friends to check it out and let you know if it looks ok on their screens. However, a basic test you can do even on one computer is to download different browsers and try them with your newsletter. You might also want to change the screen resolution from your current one to lower and higher ones as part of the test. The standard computer operates in SVGA true color, but you should also see other configurations.

Testing the way the message reaches your audience

This is mostly a test that resembles a focus group or a survey. Send the newsletter to a few people and ask them about it once they have read it. Did your message go through without any obstacles? Did they find the graphic layout attractive? What did they think about the photos you used in your newsletter? How did they respond to the call to action at the end of the newsletter? Were they tempted to find out more by visiting your website? Once you get answers to these questions you can easily see whether your newsletter is working properly. The message is essential and there is no point in going through all the trouble to publish the Internet newsletter unless you get the readers to visit your website and to trust your company.

Putting it all together

All of the things mentioned above sound like a lot of stuff to do for a simple newsletter. However, keep in mind that once you get the pattern right and once the first issue of the newsletter starts having success you will never have to repeat 90% of that work. It might still be a good idea to test your Internet newsletter in different browsers if you have made changes to the graphic design or layout. It would also be advisable to have at least one more person read each issue of the newsletter before sending it out, to see if you might have passed some errors.

Testing your newsletter is essential. Both the technical details of the newsletter and the expected response from the readers have to be tested thoroughly in order to ensure its success.

Link popularity is the single most influential factor for determining how well a web site will perform in search engine rankings. A web site's link popularity is computed from the number and more importantly, the quality of links pointing to a web site.

Link Popularity history

To gain a better understanding of link popularity it is useful to know why it became so crucial for search engine rankings. In the past a web page's ranking was determined, amongst other factors, by the number of keyword occurences within 'on-page' elements i.e. in page text, META tags, title tag. When web developers learned that they could trick a search engine to return their web pages by cramming keywords into their pages the search engines had to get a bit smarter. They were using 'on-page' elements to determine relevance so it was only natural that they would look to elements out of direct control of the web page creator i.e. 'off-page' elements. Search engines made the assumption that the greater the number of links from other sites pointing to a web site, the more popular the web site is and therefore a more quality resource. This worked nicely in theory but in practice it was also to be abused.

Web site owners figured out many ways to get links pointing to their web sites one example of which was through the use of link farms, pages the contained nothing more than a collection of links, Quantity of links was being abused so the search engines made use of the old saying "quality not quantity" and began to assign a quality factor to each of the links pointing to a web site. Now web sites that had a higher number of high quality links were looked upon favourably by the search engines. Building link popularity became a science in itself and today is still the most time-consuming and frustrating activity for a search engine optimizer.

Main classes of links

Note: In the following examples SiteA is our web site and SiteB is an outside site (i.e. a web site under a different domain name than SiteA).

Inbound links:

Inbound links to a web site are links that originate from an outside web site. An example would be a link on SiteB pointing into a page on SiteA.

Outbound links from a web site are links pointing to a page on an outside web site. An example would be a link on SiteA pointing out to a page on SiteB.

There are two further classifications of links:

Reciprocal links:

An example of a reciprocal link is when SiteA links to SiteB AND SiteB links to SiteA, the link is reciprocated by both parties.

To achieve a high link popularity the type of links to build are inbound one-way links. This simulates how natural links are created i.e. links that people create to point to your site because they found it worth linking to.

For outbound links it is natural to assume that they might decrease link popularity of a web site but this is not true. You do not give away your link popularity when you link to another site. They do not add to your link popularity though.

Reciprocal links can add to your link popularity if the web site that you exchange links with has a higher link popularity than your site. However they are not as powerful as inbound, one-way links as they are quite artificial in nature i.e. most probably created by communication between the owners of both sites.

How to build link popularity

So it is quite obvious that to help build up a nice link popularity many inbound, one-way links need to be created. This can be achieved in a number of different (and most importantly, legal) ways:

Directories:

Directories are categorized listings of links from around the web. Many, many directories exist and vary in their methods of getting your link posted on them. They provide a great source of quality inbound, one-way links. Getting listed in quality directories such as DMOZ or Yahoo can be more beneficial for your link popularity than a lot of links from smaller, newer directories.

Great site content:

The most powerful way to get inbound, one-way links is to have great site content that other web sites will want to link to. This allows you to get links from sites other than directories, which can definitely be better. The best thing about this is that it requires no communication on your part, it just happens naturally. If your site has poor content then others sites may not link, including the directories. Most of the top ranking web sites today got to the top because of great content. Writing interesting and informative articles for your web site is a good way of getting these kind of links.

Emailing web site owners:

If you come across a listing of links on a web site other than a directory e.g. a links page on a somebody's personal web site, it can do no harm to write the web site owner a polite email requesting a link to your site from their page. They may request a reciprocal link in return but sometimes they do not and you can get a quality inbound, one-way link for your efforts. I have got many links in the past using this method. In my email I always ask them to visit my site first before making a decision to link and I personalise each email with a comment or two about their site.

If I see that the person likes a certain book I like or hobby I will mention that in my comment and then put a link to my site using a banner or a text link.

I then will send out a bulletin to tell people I've updated my blog. 1. Make sure that it is a SEO friendly web directory

Links must be direct, static, and SEO-friendly that allows search engine robots to easily find and index your link:

View the web page source code by right clicking on the page and selecting “View Source” from the drop-down menu.
Look at the page meta tags, namely ROBOTS and make sure it doesn’t contain NOFOLLOW or NOINDEX attributes.

Vary the link title and description at least slightly for each submission to make the links look natural in eyes or search engines. When search engines find hundreds or thousands of links to your website with the same anchor text (title) and description, they just discount the links value and your money and time were wasted to no result in rankings. It’s enough just to change one word in title and phrases order in the description from directory to directory, and use different keywords for every 10th web directory to get natural links for your website and improve its rankings for all the keywords.
Remember that human users are also interested in your website listing and will follow the link if they find it interesting and useful. That’s why to use normal language for the title and description, that takes attention of the users and prompt them to click the link.

5. Write down all web directories you have submitted your website to

The first reason for this is to avoid repeated submission to the same web directory because this may cause the first submission rejection or deletion.
Also it’s just helpful and handy to have summary list of where and when you submitted your website, so in few weeks you can return and check if your website has been added, because some web directories send notification about website inclusion but some do not and you have to check it manually.

Instant Traffic Techniques for Mini-Sites

When building websites there are two main options: large content site or small mini-sites. Large content sites normally focus more on providing "information". Mini-sites, however, normally have one purpose only, to sell. Given what search engines want, large content sites are much better for getting search engine traffic. Most of the time (unless you're excellent at optimizing) it's hard to get mini-sites to rank well for competitive keywords. This is why most do NOT rely on search engines for traffic to their mini-sites. In all honesty, the best strategy is to combine the two types of sites by having a large content site to rank well with search engines that feeds traffic to your mini-sites. However, not all of us have the time or know-how to easily build large sites that do well with search engines. Most of us just want to put up a small site and start making money. Here are the 3 traffic generating techniques I use everyday for traffic to mini-sites.

#1: Forums/Discussion Boards
I have made more than $6,000 from one mini-site just by targeting it to the right forum in my signature file. All I did was leave a nice statement in my signature file; in 1 month I attracted over 5,000 targeted visitors that converted to over $6,000 for me. The basic strategy here is that you need to find related forums and become active in them. Get yourself known, find out what those members talk about and find an affiliate product to fit their demand. Then, make a nice, simple, yet captive site with a great headline followed by a review of the product. Test it and if it pulls well, you have a winner. If not, choose another product.

#2: E-zine Advertising
I would rate e-zine advertising at the second best way to gather traffic to your mini-sites only because this technique can cost some money. Forum promotions have no cost (typically). However, e-zine advertising can provide much better results. Forum marketing requires you taking the time to make sensible responses or asking good questions. With e-zine advertising, however, you just write a good promotion and let the publisher send it out. An advantage of e-zine advertising is that you know before you promote that you have a targeted audience that has already expressed an interest in your topic. Also, the subscriber and the publisher most likely have a good relationship (considering the subscriber has not left) and so your promotion comes with credibility and may get more attention. One of the keys to doing well with e-zine advertising (for me) has been repeated ads in the same e-zine. I have found that my results are best in the second of third promotion. However, if I get no results on my first mailing, I do not repeat that e-zine again. Warning: Not all e-zines are the same. Some will be major winners and others will be major flops. #3: Directory SitesAlright, here is the controversial technique that I use very successfully. I know some of you will think that it is "wrong" - but in the end, my job is to teach you how I get my traffic; that is exactly what I am going to do. Directory sites are sites created by software that automatically build you a site which is 500 or more pages. These sites are just simply uploaded to a domain name. Most (if done right) tend to do well with search engines. That traffic is then forwarded to your mini-sites. As you can see, we're holding fast to our policy of building a funnel system where we use the large sites to bring in the "no cost" search engine traffic (which is also highly targeted). However, all the "selling" takes place on our mini-sites. Large sites = Traffic Gathering Mini sites = Conversion Into Sales Obviously there are many more techniques to use to attract traffic to your mini-sites such as banners, pay per click, link exchanging, etc... I just wanted to discuss the top 3 that are the easiest to implement and require the least learning curve (in my opinion)

In general, attempts to trick engine crawlers fail miserably and will usually affect your natural rankings detrimentally. Avoid all activities described below.

Never Seek Quick Fixes: If a service promises too much, it probably will not deliver. Products that promise millions of unique visitors or services that email millions of "eager" recipients are anything but quick fixes - they are immediate problems. Subscribing to these services usually results in search engine banishment!
Avoid Link Farms: Link farms are sites that link to numerous other sites with the hopes of improving page rankings. Beware: link farms spell immediate trouble - so avoid them at all costs! Engines like Google interpret link farms as spam and actually remove participating Web sites from search engine indexes.
Avoid Splash Pages: Flash and heavily graphic introductions prohibit engines from crawling your site. Because crawlers work best with text links, splash pages are very troublesome. A good rule of thumb: always keep your most valuable and compelling information up-front and in text. Bob's Big Boy (www.bigboy.com) uses a splash page and, as a result, prohibits crawlers from reaching the body of the site.
Avoid Frames: Never use pages with frames. Frames are too complex for the crawlers and too cumbersome to index.
Avoid Cookies: Never require cookies for Web site access! Search engine crawlers are unable to enter any cookie-required materials; similarly, crawlers are unable to enter or index secure pages (https, password protection, etc).
Avoid JavaScript when Possible: Though JavaScript menus are very popular, they disable crawlers from accessing those links. Most, well-indexed Web sites incorporate text-based links primarily because they are search engine friendly. If necessary, JavaScript should be referenced externally.
Avoid Search-Box Navigation: Never rely on search boxes for site navigation; engine crawlers are incapable of entering text into search boxes and will be unable to find those pages.
Avoid Redirects: Search engines frown upon companies that use numerous Web sites to redirect to a single Web site.
Avoid Internal Dynamic URLs on the Home page: Though many sites incorporate internal dynamic links, they should not incorporate those links on the home page. Engine crawlers are currently ill-equipped to navigate dynamic links - which often pass numerous parameters using excessive characters.
Session ID's: Do not leave URL session ID's on for engine crawlers; they will be unable to access and index your site.
Eliminate Pop-Up Ads: Search engines frown upon pop-up advertisements - especially when they occur on the home page! Eliminating all pop-up ads will win favor with the engines and make your site more crawler friendly.
Eliminate Hidden / Invisible Text: Search engines immediately recognize hidden text and consider such practices to be "cheating."

Submitting my site is enough?
No. Indexing will take up to 8 weeks, but this is not enough to start getting visitors. Being in the top search results depends mostly (but not only) on popularity of your site, and a new site is not popular at all. So you may need a different strategy.

In case you are using a popular free hosting service, robots may never visit your site. It is convenient to have your own site with your own domain name. In case you have not got it, check 6 international extensions in only one click here (fast search without graphics). For registration, it has no sense to pay over $9 (check for "register domain" a search engine).

Simple strategy to increase popularity
Let's suppose you site includes a html tutorial. You will need to search for "html tutorial" at google (or other search engine). Search results will show a list of sites. Copy the URL of one site which is related to your topic (for example "www.htmltutor.com" and find who is linking to them in the net by searching at Google for "link:http://www.htmltutor.com". Some of the pages linking to that site are probably pages including links to several html tutorials. Visit them one by one and ask webmaster to add a link to your site. This procedure is very time consuming, but it is very effective to increase your position at search engines.

Pay-per-click search engines

The only potential benefit of this services is that your site may be found by robots throught links in those directories (but robots are prepared to recognize these directories, and they will not index most of them). It is our recomendation not to use this services.

Getting money from ads in your site
Most sites will be unable to pay expenses until they are getting about 10.000 unique visitors per month. So do not place ads in your site unless you are having those visitors. The cheapest hosting services will be enought to handle this amount of visitors.

Introduction to Site Design It has been said for ages that "first impressions last a lifetime", and as we enter the information age, this old saying still rings true. In today's dynamic, competitive Internet world, creating a base of regular visitors is one of the keys to success, and the design of your site is extremely important because it is, in a very real sense, the first impression you make on millions of Internet users worldwide. An attractive, user-friendly site design can be the difference between success and failure, and therefore a good amount of time should be devoted to making your site as good as possible. Designing a good site, however, is a lot more difficult than merely dragging and dropping some pictures and text onto a page and arranging it to look nice. Successful sites must try to come up with the perfect marriage of form and function, making sure that neither component is lacking or in excess.

Tip One:What is Your Site About?
Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind when designing your site is that there is by no means one site design that is best. In fact, the nature of your site, its content, and its theme should all be carefully considered in order to ensure that your site has the look and feel you desire, without sacrificing the user-friendliness that will keep the hits streaming in. So before you open up Dreamweaver and start creating tables, and inserting text blocks and images, sit back and think about what it is you want your website to portray, and how you want visitors to feel when they visit your site. If your site is a personal website, think in terms of how you can exhibit your personality and style. If your site is a commercial website, think in terms of how you want your customers to feel about your products and services. A good deal of planning beforehand will allow you to choose the correct theme for your website, saving you the headache of going back and trying to get it right afterwards.

Tip Two: Research, Research, Research.
After you have come up with the look and feel that you feel is most appropriate for your website, the next step is to research what other websites with similar objectives have done. Spend some time looking at existing websites, and make notes of their respective positives and negatives; then think of how your site can incorporate the positives, while avoiding the negatives. You can learn a lot about what works and what doesn't by looking at the layout, color scheme, text, and images of other websites, and then use that knowledge to get the most out of your site.

Tip Three: Planning.
Once you have completed your research, and come up with an idea of what you want your site to look like, the next step is to plan your site. The best way to do this is to start by drawing a sitemap, covering all of the pages you plan to create. By drawing a sitemap, you will be able to see clearly exactly how your site will work, and which links you will have to create to make it work the way you planned. Tip Four: User Friendliness.
Regardless of how beautiful your site is, if users can not navigate it, they will simply find another site. Try to lay out your site in a clear, logical manner, and avoid using image-based mouseover links. This will help ensure that your site is easy to navigate, and will still leave you plenty of room to add your personal design touches

Tip Five: Images/Page size.
As we all know, images add a lot to a website, but it is important to understand that they also add a lot of size to web pages, size which can increase loading time. As a result of this fact, you should try to use the minimum amount of images on each page. Try to limit your pages to a total of 30kb, including text, background images, and images. This will ensure that all pages will be loaded in about 5 seconds, even if the user happens to be using a dial-up connection.Another thing to consider when deciding the amount of images to use on your web pages is that each file on a web page requires a separate HTTP request to the server. What this means is that using a lot of small images, which add up to less than 30kb is still going to slow down your site considerably.

Tip Six: Tables.
When using tables in the creation of your site, it is important to make sure that you do not use one table for the majority of your site. If you do use one table, users will not be able to see any of your content until the entire table has been loaded. In order to avoid this problem, break your page into at least two tables. The top table should contain your page header and some links, while the bottom table should contain the remaining content. This will allow the user to see part of your page quickly, so that they do not get discouraged by a long wait.

Tip Seven: Browsers.
When you have finished designing your site, be sure to take a look at it in several different browsers. Sometimes your "perfect" design will look atrocious when viewed with a different browser, which means you will have to go back and fix your errors. Still, it is much better to catch your own errors before your visitors do.

Tip Eight: Navigation Bars.
One of the most helpful trends in web design that has gained popularity in the last few years is the in-site navigation bar, which helps users know exactly where they are in your site. Typically a navigation bar looks something like this: You are at: Home>My Hobbies>SportsThis means that you are currently in the Sports page of the My Hobbies Section of your site. Navigation bars are by no means essential to a good website, but are a helpful tool to make your site more user-friendly to users.

Tip Nine: Plug-ins.
Over the past year or so, a number of plug-ins have been developed allowing you to add advanced graphics and animation on to your website. Before you load up your site with these animated graphics, it is important to understand that most users do not have these plugins installed on their computers, nor do they have the patience to download them before viewing the site. The exception to this rule is Macromedia's Shockwave Flash Plug-in, which is installed on most computers.

Tip Ten: Meta Tags.
One of the most important things not to forget when designing your site is the importance of meta tags. Site description and keyword Meta tags are the most important factors in getting recognized by search engines, which will bring your site more hits. When writing your site description remember to keep it clear, concise, and to the point, and do not load it up with keywords, because it should make sense when displayed on a search engine results page.
